Ski Conditions and Weather Information

The area is popular amongst those who enjoy invigorating outdoor activities; water sports in the summer and snow sports in the winter. It boasts a beautiful 18 hole golf course and lies on the River Spey, popular for trout and salmon fishing. As part of the Cairngorms National Park, climbers and walkers will not be disappointed with the proximity of challenging mountains or meandering paths.

The town itself has a busy main street. There are plenty of hotels offering supper and entertainment, coffee or beer! Shops here cater for essentials as well as tempting you to traditional highland fare. Whether you are looking for venison sausages or a painting to remind you of your visit, you won't be disappointed. Coire Mor, on East Terrace runs parallel with the main street which is a short walk.

There are various villages and towns within easy reach, offering plenty to do. Kincraig hosts the Highland Wildlife Park and Newtonmore, The Highland Folk Museum; both are within 5 miles of Kingussie, an ideal cycling distance.Check to see if the local shinty team are playing during your stay for something different. They are rarely beaten!

You may recognise Kingussie from the popular television show 'Monarch of the Glen'. Much of the filming was done in Kingussie and the surrounding area. The 'big house' at Ardverikie was used in filming for this show and the movie Mrs Brown. You will find little reminders of the series at Coire Mor.

Due to its location, Kingussie is also a great base for day trips to Glencoe, Fort William and many other popular 'Undiscovered Scotland' areas.

We provide lots of information and ideas for things to do in Kingussie and the surrounding area in our Welcome Pack.

Kingussie Restaurants
  • The Auld Alliance - 01540 661506 - The best restaurant with rooms in the PH postcode! It can be seen from Coire Mor, so no designated driver required. Liddy the owner was the official caterer to Monarch of the Glen during filming in Kingussie, she works with children in the local community, in her own 'Fifteen' kind of way and operates a set price menu for 3 courses with lots of choice. Fantastic food and great wine, and if you are really good, you can attend one of Liddy's cooking courses! This restaurant should have a Michelin star! You must call to make a reservation.
  • The Cross - 01540 661762 - Another great restaurant with rooms comes highly recommended, but again, you must call to make a reservation.
  • Duke of Gordon Hotel - 01540 661302 - Traditional Scottish dinner.
  • Happy Days Fish & Chip Take Away - 01540 661175 - No reservation required for sitting in! An inexpensive meal out and children are most welcome. Alternatively, take away and have a picnic by the duck reserve.
  • The Silver Fjord - 01540 661292 - Traditional cooking for bar lunch/supper, dinner or traditional Sunday lunch.
Aviemore

Aviemore is still a very popular tourist resort, with a huge amount of activities for families. You may have spent time at Santa Claus Land as a child, which sadly is no longer, but in place are a host of adventurous things to do. The Colyumbridge Hotel is still popular for swim lunches and days out geared around the family.
